Started with one truck in 1973
C&L Fuel Inc. began in 1973, when Susan stepped out of the gas station business and bought her first delivery truck. She was living in Northeast Philadelphia then, and later moved to Bristol, PA, after falling in love with an old historic house.
Susan and Ollie built the business together, taking orders by pager and payphone and then heading out to help customers with their fuel.
Getting started wasn’t easy. Back then, fuel suppliers didn’t care to do business with a woman. That only made Susan fight harder and work harder to keep homes warm, and customers respected her for never giving up on them through the cold months. Susan became the first woman to run a heating oil business in Bucks County, and she paved the way for the women who came after her. She had more than one chance to sell for a lot of money. Once she slammed her book shut and told the buyer:
“My business isn’t a hobby. These are families that need me.”

A family business, three generations deep
Susan’s children grew up in the business. Her son Eric started out delivering fuel to customers, and her daughter Kimberly learned the ins and outs of oil heat. When the family lost Kimmy to illness, Susan’s grandson Zack stepped in and expanded C&L into air conditioning and gas heating, plus water heater repair and installation. As Susan got older, she trusted Eric to take her place, keeping the business running smoothly and customers taken care of.
Today the team is still family. Zack’s girlfriend Krystina runs the phones and the back office, his older brother Mike is on the service crew, and Krystina’s father Chad helps answer the phones.
Today, at 86 years old, Susan is mostly retired, but she still lends a helping hand whenever she can. She now enjoys spending time with her great-grandchildren and watching the family business she started with one truck in 1973 continue to grow through three generations.
