What the technician looks at

What an oil burner cleaning and tune-up covers

A plain-language summary of what our technicians do on a tune-up. The full plan checklists are on our plan pages.

  • Burner cleaning The burner is pulled and cleaned, and the nozzle and oil filter are changed.
  • Ignition Electrodes are checked and set so the burner lights cleanly.
  • Combustion test We test the flame with a combustion analyzer and adjust the burner.
  • Chamber and flue passages Soot is cleaned out so heat goes into your home, not up the chimney.
  • Safety controls Primary control and limit controls are checked.
  • Thermostat We make sure it’s calling for heat the way it should.
  • Gas systems Burners, gas valve, venting and safety controls are inspected and the burner is cleaned if needed.

Why yearly, and when to book

Why once a year?

Oil heat leaves soot behind as it runs. Over a season it builds up on the burner and inside the boiler or furnace. A yearly cleaning keeps the burner lighting cleanly and gives a technician a chance to spot a worn part before it leaves you without heat.

When to book

Late spring through early fall is the easiest time to get on the schedule. Waiting for the first cold night means you’re booking at the same time as everyone else.

Heating Tune-Ups FAQ

Questions we hear

How often should my oil burner be cleaned?
Once a year, before the heating season.
What’s the difference between a tune-up and a service plan?
A tune-up is the yearly visit. A service plan includes that yearly tune-up plus other plan benefits. See Oil Heating Service Plans and HVAC Service Plans for what each plan includes.
Do I need a service plan to get a tune-up?
No. You can book a one-time tune-up without a plan. If you’d like one every year, our service plans include it.
Is a tune-up the same as a repair?
No. A tune-up is maintenance on a working system. If your heat isn’t working, schedule a repair: Need an existing system diagnosed or repaired? Schedule an HVAC service appointment with one of our technicians.
My burner keeps going into reset. Will a tune-up fix it?
Don’t wait for a tune-up for that. If your burner has locked out, don’t press reset. Call us at 215-785-6161. More: Why Does My Oil Burner Keep Going Into Reset?
