Air Conditioning Tune-Ups

Your AC sits all winter, then has to work hard as soon as summer hits. A yearly check-up gets it ready before the first hot day. You can book one without a service plan.

Any applicable diagnostic fee will be explained before your service appointment is confirmed.

What the technician looks at

What an AC check-up covers

A summary of what we check. The full checklist is on our HVAC Service Plans page.

  • Electrical voltage, contacts, relays and connections.
  • Cooling performance refrigerant and the temperature drop across the indoor coil.
  • Outdoor unit condenser coil cleaned, unit leveled, moving parts lubricated.
  • Indoor side blower, motors and the condensate drain and pump.
  • Leaks and noise visible leaks and vibration.
  • Filter and thermostat

Some items cost extra, like indoor coil cleaning and filter replacement; see the plan page for details.

Why yearly, and when to book

Why check your AC every year?

Dirt on the outdoor coil, a clogged drain or a weak part is easy to catch in spring and annoying to find on the first 90-degree day.

When to book

Spring, before the cooling season starts.

When not to wait for spring

Spring is the best time for a check-up, but a few things are worth a call any time:

  • The house takes longer to cool than it did last summer.
  • Air from the vents feels less cold than you remember.
  • Water near the indoor unit or around the condensate pump.
  • New sounds from the outdoor unit when it starts.
  • Humidity hangs around inside while the AC runs.

If the AC isn’t cooling at all, that’s a repair, not a tune-up. AC Repair →

Heat pumps and ductless too

Our HVAC plans include yearly tune-ups for heat pumps and ductless systems, not just central air. A heat pump works in both seasons, so its yearly visit matters even more.

Air Conditioning Tune-Ups FAQ

Questions we hear

When is the best time for an AC tune-up?
Spring, before you need the AC every day.
Does a tune-up include adding refrigerant?
A tune-up checks the refrigerant level. Adding refrigerant or repairing leaks isn’t part of a tune-up.
What can I do between visits?
Change the filter when it’s dirty and keep leaves, grass clippings and plants clear of the outdoor unit. Leave panels and wiring alone.
Is a tune-up part of a service plan?
Yes. Our HVAC plans include a yearly tune-up for central air, heat pumps and ductless systems. See HVAC Service Plans for what each plan includes.
What if the technician finds a problem?
You hear what we found and your options before any work.
Do you tune up heat pumps and ductless systems too?
Yes. We service heat pumps and ductless systems as well as central air. If you have more than one cooling system, ask about tuning them up on the same visit.
Do you service AC systems you didn’t install?
Yes. We repair just about every make of equipment.
