Why yearly, and when to book

Why your furnace needs a yearly visit

A furnace pulls a lot of air through the house, and dust ends up on the blower and burner. Safety controls and venting are worth a trained look every year, especially on a gas furnace.

When to book

Before heating season, while the schedule is open. If you also have central air, ask about checking both.

What changes with your fuel

A gas or propane furnace gets a close look at the gas valve, the gas pressure, the flame sensing and the venting, because those are the parts that keep the burner lighting safely. An oil furnace has a burner much like an oil boiler’s, so its visit adds a burner cleaning, a new nozzle and oil filter, and a combustion test. Every furnace gets the blower, the filter, the safety controls and the thermostat checked.

Between visits

Look at the filter every month or two during the heating season and change it when it looks dirty. Keep boxes and storage away from the furnace so air can reach it, and so a technician can too.

Furnace Tune-Ups FAQ

Questions we hear

How often should a furnace be tuned up?
Once a year, before heating season.
Can I change my own furnace filter?
Yes. Changing the filter is one of the few furnace jobs that’s meant for homeowners. Use the same size and follow the arrow on the filter for airflow direction. Leave everything else inside the cabinet to a technician.
Do you tune up furnaces you didn’t install?
Yes. We repair just about every make of equipment.
Can I book a furnace tune-up without a service plan?
Yes. One-time tune-ups are available. A plan just means the yearly visit is already taken care of.
Is a furnace tune-up part of a service plan?
Yes. Our HVAC plans include a yearly tune-up. See HVAC Service Plans for gas furnaces and Oil Heating Service Plans for oil.
