Furnaces: Types & Options

A furnace heats air and sends it through your ductwork to every room. We repair gas, oil and propane furnaces and help Bucks County homeowners choose the right one when it’s time to replace.

How a furnace works

The burner heats a heat exchanger, the blower pushes house air across it, and the warm air goes out through your vents. The same blower and ductwork often carry cool air from a central air conditioner in summer.

Signs your home has a furnace

  • Warm air comes out of vents or registers in floors, walls or ceilings
  • There’s a return grille somewhere that pulls air back in
  • The heating unit has a filter slot and a blower
  • Central air, if you have it, uses the same vents

If you have radiators or baseboard instead, see Boilers: Types & Options →

Furnace types

Gas furnaces

For homes with natural gas. Available in standard and high-efficiency designs; the right one depends on your venting and your home. We install and repair propane furnaces too.

Oil furnaces

For homes that heat with oil and have ductwork. We install and repair them, and C&L can deliver the oil.

Furnace + central air

If you have or want central air, the furnace and AC work together. When both are getting older, we may suggest replacing them together. Central Air Conditioners →

Repairs, tune-ups and replacement

A furnace that’s looked after tends to give fewer surprises. We repair gas, oil and propane furnaces, and we repair just about every make of equipment. A yearly tune-up checks the burner, the blower, the safety controls and the venting; on an oil furnace it adds a burner cleaning and a combustion test. Furnace Repair → · Furnace Tune-Ups →

When replacement makes sense

When repairs keep coming or a major part gives out, we’ll tell you honestly whether a repair or a new furnace makes more sense. If your furnace and AC are both getting older, we may suggest replacing them together.

Furnace brands

Furnace brands we install and repair: York, Amana and Daikin (gas furnaces) and Thermoflo (oil furnaces). We repair just about every make of equipment.

Questions we hear

How do I know if I have a furnace?
If warm air blows from vents in your floors, walls or ceilings, you most likely have a furnace (or a heat pump).
Gas or oil furnace: which is better?
It depends on what fuel your home has and what’s available on your street. We’ll walk you through it. If gas is available, we also do oil-to-gas conversions.
Do you install propane furnaces?
Yes. We install and repair propane furnaces as well as gas and oil furnaces.
Does a furnace need a yearly tune-up?
Yes, once a year before heating season. See Furnace Tune-Ups.
Will a new furnace work with my central air?
The furnace blower also moves the cool air from your AC, so we plan the two together when we install.
Do you work on furnaces you didn’t install?
Yes. We repair just about every make of equipment. See Furnace Repair for common problems.
Can I finance a new furnace?
Financing options available through FTL Finance.
