Good to know

Defrost is normal. In cold weather a heat pump runs short defrost cycles, and you may see a little steam from the outdoor unit. That’s expected.

Ice that keeps building isn’t. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call. Don’t chip at the ice.

Refrigerant and high-voltage work are for trained technicians only.

Heat Pump Installation, Service & Repair FAQ

Questions we hear

Is it normal for my heat pump to frost up in winter?
Light frost is normal, and the unit clears it with defrost cycles. If heavy ice keeps building and doesn’t clear, call for service.
Why is my backup heat running so much?
Backup heat is meant to help on the coldest days or during defrost. If it seems to run all the time, the heat pump may not be doing its share. A technician can find out why.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
At least once a year. Because it heats and cools, it works more months of the year than a furnace or AC alone.
Do you install heat pumps?
Yes. We install heat pumps and service them. Planning a new heating or cooling system? C&L Fuel Inc. offers free estimates for new equipment installations and replacements.
Do you service heat pumps you didn’t install?
Yes. We repair just about every make of equipment.
I got a heat pump repair quote from someone else. Can you look?
Got a repair or replacement recommendation from another company? Send us the estimate and a few photos by email, phone or Housecall Pro for an initial review. If that isn’t enough, we may recommend an in-person evaluation.
